Do I need to book?

You cannot hold a place on a particular sailing. Buying ahead is still worth it: the ticket is good for any departure on the date printed on it, or earlier, while there is space on board.

Buying ahead skips the queue at the ticket window, but not the vehicle queue for boarding. The departure time you pick is not binding and is not printed on the ticket.
